Chapter Fifteen
Aiden stopped by a thrift store on the outskirts of New Orleans. He purchased some old jeans that were a couple of sizes too big, a worn red flannel shirt, old shoes, and a floppy, brown hat.
Dressing like a vagabond, he gathered his suitcase and headed to the docks. He sat a cup in front of him with a sign that read “Homeless, please help.” It was a perfect disguise, because the city had more than its share of homeless people. If he managed to collect any money, he could drop it off at a church, anonymously. He had just gotten settled when he saw Faith and the dogs hurrying up the boardwalk.
Bentley spotted him immediately and gave a slight nod. She let the boys off their leashes, and then took a bench across from where Aiden was crouched. Taking out a book from Bones’ doggie bag, she pretended to read while she waited. The corners of her mouth turned up ever so slightly as she felt her FBI agent watching her.
Before she could finish a chapter, she looked up to see Tombstone walking toward her. He had an evil gleam in his eyes, like a hawk bearing down on a field mouse.
“Ah, you are a ray of sunshine on this dreary day. Faith, I am so happy to run into you again. How have you been?” Larson gushed.
She did her best to relax and smile. “Oh, I have been just fine. After the storm yesterday, the boys were getting cabin fever.” She caught his eye roll but didn’t acknowledge it.
“Where have the little scamps run off to? It seems that there is usually one always on your lap.” He said while he ran his hand through his slick white hair.
She nodded over to the piers. “They are just sniffing around the wet grass.” Tombstone looked in their direction before turning his attention back to Faith.
Judging the distance between the dogs and the bench, he took a risk by putting his arm around Faith. Aiden and Tucker almost ran into each other as they hurried over to them.
Aiden was hunkered over as he asked them for spare change in a bad Cajun accent. Faith had to cover her mouth to hide the smile that took over as she noticed Aiden had gone so far as to rub dirt over his face.
Tombstone glared at him. “Begging is prohibited on the boardwalk. I suggest you take your little cup and try your luck on Bourbon Street. A bum could get into trouble hanging around here. Maybe you can go find a cigarette butt or a bottle of booze with a few drops left in it. Just get away from me and this lovely lady, immediately.”
Aiden just nodded, shuffling back to his place across from them. He wanted to punch the guy in his smug face, but for now, he was glad the interruption had caused the scum to move his arm.
“It’s really fine; the poor man is probably hungry. The storms last night must have been hard on the homeless.
